Heating Tips for Holiday Parties

The holiday party season has arrived. Time to get your home ready for the festive get-togethers that everyone looks forward to all year long. It’s important to make sure that the atmosphere in your home is just right, including making sure all your guests stay warm and comfortable. Here are some top heating tips to make your holiday party a success:

Close Off Unused Rooms

Rather than heating rooms and areas of your home that will not be in use during your party, close them off so that the heat will be directed to the occupied areas of the house. This will also keep guests from wandering into random rooms in your home.

Change the Air Filter in Your Furnace

Before your event, change the air filter in your furnace. If you have done so very recently, you can skip this step. However, if the air filter is even moderately dirty, change it before your party. The last thing you want is to have dust and debris circulating through your home while you have guests.

Clean Heat Duct and Vents; Keep Them Clear

The day before your party, wipe down the heating grates an air vents in your home with disinfectant and warm water. This will clear away any dust or dirt that has settled in these areas so that it is not discovered by your guests. Take a moment as well to double-check and make certain that none of the air vents in your home are blocked by furniture, curtains, etc.

Make Use of Your Fireplace

Nothing is more festive than a warm, crackling fire in your fireplace. Make sure the fireplace and surrounding area are clean and that you have everything conveniently at hand to keep a fire going for the duration of your party. Have a protective screen in place for added safety. The fire will keep the room cozy and warm, giving you the opportunity to turn down the thermostat a few degrees.

Use Humidifiers

Humidifiers add the perfect amount of moisture to the air to retain heat so that your home will stay warm and comfortable. They also provide healthier air to breathe, since humidifiers work to kill airborne bacteria as well. Place small humidifiers in each room, or purchase a home humidifier to make the atmosphere in your entire home healthy and refreshing.

Turn the Thermostat Down While You Prep for Your Party

As you are getting everything prepared for your party throughout the day, take the opportunity to conserve some resources, and save money by turning your thermostat down. The activity will keep you warm as you go about cleaning, cooking, decorating, and setting everything up in preparation for the festivities.

Put Your Ceiling Fans to Good Use

Change the setting on your ceiling fans to “reverse” and allow them to help disperse the warm air throughout the rooms. By switching the setting to “reverse”, this enables the ceiling fan to direct the warm air back down into the room. This setting will also prevent the fans from cooling the air down. You will be able to turn your thermostat down since the ceiling fans will keep the warm air circulating.

Supplement with Space Heaters

Use small space heaters placed in strategic areas of larger rooms. This will keep the rooms warm and comfortable without you having to turn up the thermostat. Make sure the space heaters are not located in walkways or where anyone could trip over a cord. They work especially well in corners or remote areas where small groups of people may gather away from the main crowd. Before putting your space heaters to use, check to make sure they are in good condition. Look for cracks, make sure settings are working properly, and check cords to make sure that they are in good condition.

Have Your HVAC System Cleaned and Inspected

If you haven’t already done so, contact an HVAC specialist and schedule a professional inspection and cleaning of your HVAC system prior to your party. An HVAC technician will inspect your system to make sure that it is winter-weather ready and thoroughly clean your entire HVAC unit, including air ducts. This type of preventive maintenance will ensure that no issues are waiting to rear their ugly heads during extreme weather, and a thorough professional cleaning will keep dirt, dust, debris, and other pollutants out of your home and away from your family.
