Ever found yourself pondering the age of your trusty air conditioning unit? Perhaps you recently moved into your current abode and have misplaced its paperwork. It happens; no big deal. However, you don’t dismiss this seemingly trivial detail entirely; in fact, it’s important information to know. The lifespan of an air conditioner typically ranges from 15 to 20 years, depending on the level of maintenance it has received. Understanding the age of your air conditioner is genuinely essential information that every homeowner should be aware of. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll be prepared to take appropriate action if you notice a decline in cooling efficiency or any other signs of inefficiency.

To help you determine the exact age of your air conditioner, your devoted Centerville Heating & Cooling team has provided these helpful steps:

HOW TO FIND OUT YOUR AIR CONDITIONER’S MANUFACTURE DATE

  • Inspect the Condenser’s Nameplate – Your initial step should always be to locate the manufacturer’s date on the unit if possible. Most condensers have a nameplate affixed to their side (the conspicuous metal box outside your house). Look to the upper right corner of this nameplate for the manufacturing date. In many cases, it will be clearly labeled as MFR DATE. However, if the date is not readily available, don’t fret! Simply move on to the next step.
  • Explore Online Resources – If the manufacture date remains elusive, take note of the unit’s brand, model, and serial number, all of which should be present on the nameplate. You can write this information on a piece of paper, or for added convenience, snap a quick photo of the nameplate. (Working smarter, not harder!) Armed with this information, you can perform a simple online search. Type in the brand, model, and serial number in any online search engine, and add “manufacture date” to the end of your query. Then click the search key. With a bit of luck, a helpful website will populate, providing instructions on how to decipher your unit’s manufacture date.
